Staying sensation Sweet It Is has been named the 2014 Sandown Greyhound of the Year.
Sweet It Is took the staying ranks by storm in 2014, having claimed 12 wins (five at Group level) and 12 seconds from 30 starts. At Sandown Park alone she compiled five wins including two at Group 1 level, and accumulated a massive $311,020 in prize money.
Owned by Braden Finn and trainer Darren McDonald, the pair purchased the greyhound in March from breeder and previous owner and trainer Len Jones. The Two Bear’s Syndicate had high expectations for their new acquisition, however never thought she’d reach the heights she has.
“She has done more than we could ever imagine,” said Finn.
Her RSN Racing & Sport Sandown Cup triumph stands as Finn’s favourite win.
“Her Sandown Cup win would have to be my favourite. For her to win the richest and most prestigious staying race is the world – it was just awesome!”
Along with Sweet It Is’s RSN Sandown Cup win, she also claimed the Group 1 SOLO Bold Trease, finished second in the Group 3 Lizrene and second in the National Distance Championship Victorian final.
Her two Group 1 wins at Sandown Park were chosen as Australian Greyhound Racing Association’s Run of the Month for May and November, and are also in the running for Run of the Year.
It’s no secret that Sweet It Is’ one of the most popular greyhounds in the country due to her breathtaking last to first racing style.
Sweet It Is has also been nominated for Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Victorian Greyhound of the Year. The winner will be announced at the Greyhound Industry Awards Night on Friday 20 February at Crown Palladium. For tickets and more information click here.
